VIRTUAL KDI 2020
Nothing can stop KDI! This year we are holding a virtual Kentucky Dance Institute. For 67 years KDI has brought folk dance, fun and family to thousands of people around the world. Our mission hasn’t changed, just the delivery. We are honored to have Ed Austin, Ahmet Lüleci, Joe Graziosi and Harry Khamis teach for us this year.

Zoom Help
All sessions listed above will be held on zoom. Here’s a page to help you learn more about zoom and virtual folk dance sessions and a few tips on zoom Etiquette.
Opening Meet & Greet
We will use this time to introduce KDI to those new to camp, help anyone have technical difficulties and have our first opportunity to see old friends and make new ones.
Folk Dance Sessions
Each of our instructors will host a zoom session where you will be able to watch them teach and dance along to the music. Each session will last an hour and have an MC who is monitoring the zoom chat for any questions for the instructors and providing any technical assistance should you require.
KDI Traditions
KDI has been holding folk dance camps for a long time and we have gathered quite a few time treasured traditions. This time will be set aside for dance Likrat Shabat, taking a group picture, holding a new type of scholarship auction and many more… especially the good night circle. Final details will be posted above.
Social Hour
Zoom sessions have been set aside for everyone to get to spend some time together. But since having 50-200 people in a zoom session isn’t conducive to promoting conversations, we have decided to provide multiple zoom sessions to help.
At camp, everyone tends to roam from one converstational group to another. Its hard to do that vitrually without some type of initial breakout so we’ve taken a stab at some zoom session groupings. Everyone is encouraged to jump back and forth between all of the zoom rooms. If you join one zoom social session and no one’s there, jump into another one. Each Zoom link will be posted here before camp starts.
Adult Social
Sometimes its nice to have some pure adult time. During in-person camp, on one night, there is an afterparty named “Adult Social”. Join this room to discuss life, dancing and enjoy the company of fellow folk dancers.
New to KDI
This year we have an abundance of virtual attendees who have never been to KDI. Join this room to meet others new to camp and have a chance each night to get to know our crazy family.
Mom’s Hallway
During in-person camp, families with very young children tend to socialize in the hallway outside of their rooms after the dance while they listen for baby cries etc. Over the years, this has grown into a frequent and rather large gathering where everyone stops by to socialize.
College Craziness
KDI always has a strong attendance from every decade of life. Our college crowd (and those of us who are ignoring that we have gotten older), love to get together and act a little silly. Come join us.
Kids Corner
We can’t forget about our little ones who look forward to visiting with each other during in-person camp. This zoom is focused on the younger generation. Stop in an say hi!
Teacher Talk (Wednesday Night Only)
This time is for our instructors both past and present to spend some time together reminessing. Feel free to drop in, say hi and listen in.
Game Night
Over the years, KDI has accumulated almost a hundred different games that are played by attendees young and old. While this year will be a bit different and require a bit more coordination, we are looking forward to still hosting a game night each evening with Mafia, musical memory and some exciting new games just for our virtual experience.
Get the MOST of Virtual KDI
We’ve come up with some ideas to help everyone’s families enjoy Virtual KDI as much as possible. We will be doing these at our house. Hope you join us.
- Dress up for each night’s theme just like during regular in-person camp.
- Find some Zoom backgrounds based upon the theme for each night. Just search on Google for Zoom Backgrounds.
- On Monday’s we normally go out for Pizza after the dance. While we won’t be together, you can still order pizza during Monday night’s social hour.
- Plan on taking pictures of your family throughout the week and posting them so everyone can see and post to facebook/instagram and tag KDI.
- Buy junk food, cheese balls and Little Debbie snack cakes and take the week off from your diet.
- We used to have everyone color folk dance drawings, add the names of attendees to them and then post them on the doors of each dorm room. To bring back a little of that tradition, here are some folk dance drawings for your family to print and color.
- Murray had a restriction on chalk drawings… but not during Virtual KDI! Have your children (or you) create some chalk drawings and post them for everyone to see.
- Buy some new crafts for your children and setup a kids craft table like at camp
- Set out some puzzles to do throughout the week and post pictures
- Get some candles/mini flashlights for Likrat Shabbat
- If you have a group of close family/friends that you are already spending time with during the covid outbreak, invite them over to share KDI with you.
- Zoom meeting are all about seeing each other’s video. If you don’t have a built in webcam into your laptop/pc, you can buy one on Amazon. The main brands are all sold out due to covid, but here is a good one for a decent price.
- Test our your laptop video/web cam with a zoom session ahead of time. Zoom is free and you can set up your own zoom session with someone else to test it out. Plus its always nice to have a video chat with a friend.
Theme Nights
Several nights at KDI traditionally have themes where many dress up in various costumes. Fee free to join into our craziness or dress casual and enjoy our wild show!
- Monday is Orange & Black night. KDI’s mascot is a knob tiger so by dressing in orange and black we blend in well with our attendees from the tiger kingdom.
- Tuesday’s night’s theme is chosen by the attendees from the previous year. This year’s theme is a Hawaiian Hula night. Throw on a lei and a Hawaiian shirt… or if you’re brave a grass skirt 🙂
- Wednesday is the Scholarship Auction. Nothing fun to dress up in tonight.
- Thursday is Kentucky Night. If you feel up to it, dress as if you were from Kentucky. You will see a lot of blue jeans, overalls, straw hats and freckles.
- Friday is the evening ballroom dance. Feel free to wear your finest, many will wear nice dresses and ethnic costumes.
Die Hard KDIers
Many of our attendees can’t get enough of camp. They attend KDI every year and keep track of the number of years they have attended camp. It is common for children who can’t remember life without KDI or attendees who have came for 20+ years. For those who want to keep their streak alive, you only need to attend three activities throughout the week and you can officially count your time. While we are keeping a roster, please be sure to put your full name in the title of your zoom session and register here to ensure you are counted.
